CARNIMUN was held on the 19th of October at SZABIST 100 as a fund raiser to cover various costs for the ZABMUN 2011 conference.
After weeks and weeks of preparations: making posters, spamming Facebook, making phone calls, bookings, and sending emails, CARNIMUN happened.
The morning was hectic, some of the stalls that had to be set up were not being let through SZABIST security, the EB and all the teams were running around trying to sort out technical issues, place the stalls, help them set up, and after all the crazy-ness we were ready to entertain!
With stalls like Karachi tips, ZAB Souvenirs, Delfrio, Bun Kebab, Pie In The Sky, Pizza Hut, Subway, Biryani of the Seas, Cotton Candy and Pani Puri; and music playing in the 100 garden, it didn’t take long to gather a crowd.
From the beginning till the very end, 100 garden was occupied with people enjoying the music, talking, chilling, eating, and of course, taking pictures.
ZABMUN Publications interviewed a few of the event attendees. We asked them what they thought of CARNIMUN and the idea behind it, how well they think it had been advertised, where they think we need to improve, and how it has improved from last year’s CARNIMUN.
Osman Ansari (Ex-President ZABMUN 2010-2011):Much better than what we had last year because last year was like a spur of the moment thing. They’ve actually put in a lot of effort. I think it’s just testament to the fact that whatever ZABMUN put’s their mind to they can actually pull off spectacular events.
Last time around, we had very ambitious plans and we did not have resources to fulfill the plans, so we put this (CARNIMUN) together at the last moment because we needed financial support to pull through. But, carrying forward that very plan this year around shows that the current EB takes this whole thing very seriously and it is something that should be taken seriously. We were the 1st flagship conference Karachi had ever seen and we need to continue that and in order to do that in this era, spiraled in cost, we need to do this.
Murtaza Akhund: Bohat acha tha, khaana bohat acha tha. But, there was no jail.
Abbas Jaffery: I think the (advertisement) was good; I’ve been wanting to come.I think it’s a really good incentive; people are out here putting up their stalls. Especially like Sanya’s stall (Artel by Bina Ali) has gotten a lot of exposure.
Anushe Khan: I don’t love it as much as Abbas. However, it’s a good initiative. I don’t remember last year’s CARNIMUN at all but this is not bad.
Shaan Alam: ticket nai hona chaye, kyunke hum ander waisey hee pay ker rahe hain.
Isabell: I’m enjoying the food. I don’t remember the CARNIMUN last year but I think this is a good idea to raise funds.
Haider Naqvi: I think it’s really good. In the sense that there are a lot of stalls, there’s actually one weird stall which is selling boxers, which is quite fascinating, that was the highlight of this event for me.
Muhammad Shah: I think it’s pretty cool, there’s a lot of random stuff to do and good stuff to buy. You have to make money somehow, pretty good way to do it.
Waleed Rashid: Decoration needed improvement.
Samina Wahid: I thought it was great. Much better than last year.
Hayat Khan (Ex-Member Social Events): CARNIMUN was a good experience. It was a mixture of events according to me, there were a variety of foods to have; there were hotdogs, puris, pizzas, ice-cream, it was basically a mixture of culture via food. As for the arrangement, it was a good event itself and was at a bigger scale compared to last year.
Last year it was a start up, this time it was a trend setter. I hope to see CARNIMUN go to the next level in its third year InshAllah
Bemisal Iqbal (Ex-Director Social Events 2009-2011): The best feeling in the world is when you look back at the past and you see what you had initiated as a mere function to raise a few thousands and have some fun, has now become a tradition by ZABMUN and has come this far.
It was truly exhilarating to see my little ones running around and working just like we used to and I must say these guys pulled it off very very well. This certainly was the best all day event this semester. Looking forward to seeing absolute awesome-ness in the coming events now. Dil khush kar ditta.
In the end, ZABMUN publications would like to leave you with some food for thought: if CARNIMUN was such a hit, imagine how awesome the rest of the social events will be. Book your tickets now, you know you want to!
